FOOT & ANKLE DISLOCATION

Ankle is a joint where leg meets the foot.The bones of the ankle joint are held in place by very strong ligaments. With severe trauma, these ligaments will tear or pull the bones creating a space between bones.

The ankle is a large joint made up of three bones:

• The shin bone (tibia)
• The thinner bone running next to the shin bone (fibula)
• A foot bone that sits above the heel bone (talus)

CAUSE

• Sport injuries
• Falls
• Motor vehicle crashes

SYMPTOMS

• Pain
• Swelling of joint
• Joint deformity
• Inability to stand or walk
• Limited or lack of movement

INVESTIGATIONS

• X-rays
• CT-scan
• MRI

TREATMENT

NON-SURGICAL

• Closed reduction and below knee cast application
• Pain medication

SURGICAL

Surgery when dislocation is associated with fractures

• Open reduction and internal fixation with plates and screws.
